Open Letter to our Herb Gardening Friends
(1996 Letter)

Happy 1996 to all our herb gardening friends. Just want to let you know what's happening with us and our herb gardens. Weare trying to retire but somehow the gardens wont let us. Especially the weeds, they just keep growing and growing and growing! We are trying some solutions to our problem such as putting signs in our garden reading:WEEDS, "You Pick!"

We decided to get really serious and came up with some answers. First of all, and the greatest change, is to limit the number of herb plants that we will have available for sale. We will no longer carry the common culinary herbs that are so readily available elsewhere. We will continue to grow the traditional medicinal herbs, Chinese medicinal herbs, and unusual culinary herbs. Special scented geraniums, lavenders, ornamental sages, and ornamental oreganos will still be available as well as other unusual herb plants. Secondly we are cutting back on our workshops. Due to many requests we will continue the medicinal herb workshops taught by Christopher Hobbs and Brian Kie Weissbuch as well as Planning an Herb Garden taught by Louie. Virginia will continue with her wreath and craft workshops as well. We started an apprentice program last year with great success. That program will continue this year. Those of you who signed up last year will be getting a call soon to see if you are still interested and to tell you when it will begin. (Late February) The day set aside for this program is always on Tuesday, 9 AM to 2PM. It is a work-exchange experience. If you are not on the list and want more information please call (408) 867-0307. We will continue our free lecture tours of the gardens one Sunday a month in April, May, June, and July. Special group tours, for a fee, will be available Monday through Friday. After some thought we decided to remain open on Saturdays 9am to 2:30pm. The gardens are at their best April to September so we will be open April 13 toSeptember 14. The gardens can be seen by special appointments at other times. We are looking forward to sharing our herb gardens with you in 1996. Have a healthy and peace filled New Year.
